World Penguin Day

Today on World Penguin Day, we celebrate the African Penguin. This feisty, cheeky and fearless seabird is Africa's only penguin species. Sadly it is endangered and unless current rates of decline (8% per year) are reversed, the species will be extinct in the wild by 2035. Climate change, over-fishing, habitat loss, oil spills and noise pollution are taking a terrible toll. The numbers are heartbreaking with less than 10,000 breeding pairs left in the wild.
